Propylene oxide (PO) is an important part of fine chemicals. Its downstream products consist of polyether polyol, propylene glycol, dimethyl carbonate, propylene glycol ether, etc, which are main raw materials of nonionic surfactant, oil field demulsifier, pesticide emulsifier and so on. Being innovation-driven has become the new normal of the development of propylene oxide industry chain. Its application prospect in high value fields such as biodegradable plastics, electronic chemicals, etc. is broad. It is the second largest terminal industry chain of propylene downstream next to polypropylene resin. With the development and application of new processes and catalysts, The production techniques of propylene oxide is diversified with a variety of craft routes. Chlorol method PO production units will have more and more restrictions. The draft of the national Directory to Industrial Structure Adjustment in April, 2019 encourages direct oxidation method for 150000 tons / year and above PO projects, co-oxidation method for 200,000 tons / year and above PO projects, and restricts PO production plants of chlorol method. Considerable profits and market demand have attracted a large number of new entrants, and the industry is in expansion. According to the available plannings, new PO capacity will mainly take HPPO, PO/SM, PO/TBA,CHP and other non-chlorol craft routes. PO/SM route is more popular, followed by the HPPO method. Up till September 2019, over 30 projects are in trial production, under construction, on preliminary work and planning, with a total propylene oxide capacity of 8.7 million tons per year.
